What: Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising Museum

"The museum is located on the ground floor of the Los Angeles campus of the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, and houses a collection of over 12,000 costumes, accessories and textiles from the 18th century through the present day, including film and theater costume. The FIDM Museum also houses the early Hollywood Costume Collection on loan from the City of Los Angeles, Department of Parks and Recreation. It presents the annual Motion Picture Costume Design exhibition at the galleries."

Where: Los Angeles, CA

[In my eyes]

Why was I there: I had the privilege to be named a semifinalist for the Ray Greenly Scholarship presented by the National Retail Federation. We had an event at the FIDM school and of course, they have a beautiful museum with vintage pieces (one pictured above is classic Christian Dior!). I never expected that I'd be there but I was really blown away specifically by the exhibit above (as you can see there are 4 photos all from the same room....) but there was even more to the museum!

What it reminded me of: I was instantly reminded of Alice in Wonderland. The giant roses and flowers hanging on the wall brought the Queen of Hearts to mind and her obsession with roses.

Recommendation: Yes, if you are near LA go to this museum. But rather a better recommendation is to visit museums dedicated to fashion whether in a larger setting or at universities! Some great ones are listed below:

- Victoria & Albert Museum | London, England

- Fashion Museum (good name) | Bath, England

- Metropolitan Museum of Art | New York City, NY

- Kyoto Costume Institute | Kyoto, Japan

- Kent State University Museum | Kent, OH
