How did you get started + what did you set out to achieve from the beginning: I started taking photos when I took a digital photography class at Penn. I had a camera, but I really didn’t know how to use it. We had assignments to finish in class, which kind of restricted what I was capturing, but I was able to learn the basics. Once I finally figured out what aperture, ISO, and shutter speed was, I realized how much I liked taking pictures. Around the end of last year, my friend and I started entertaining the idea of starting a studio—where we could work on creating content for photography, film, and design. Once sophomore year started, we started putting together shoots and having fun with different ideas.
What's the hardest part? I think the hardest part for me is making creative choices--especially when it comes to editing. I can take a photo a couple of different ways, in terms of framing and composition, but in post-production, Photoshop opens up millions of different possibilities. I usually struggle with knowing how I actually want a photo to end up looking.
Who'd you want to collab with if you could? If I could collab with anyone, it would be either Ren Hang or Kiyoshi Awazu. Both, unfortunately, have died. Ren Hang’s work really inspired me when I first started taking photos, and I admire his method and philosophy—or a lack thereof—on his photography. Kiyoshi Awazu utilizes colors in an incredible way and really knows how to abstract concrete subjects. He attempts to root his work in traditional Japanese iconography, but mixes it up with a more modern take. I think it would have been super interesting and eye-opening to have been able to work with them.
