Experience Local Culture through China's Street Food

What: Street Night Market

[In My Eyes]

Most unforgettable moment: Walking in a sea of hundreds of people with dozens of vendors and seeing street food I had never witnessed before. For the daring, there were live scorpions on a stick and even snake. But don't worry there were still many sweet and welcoming desserts like huge cups of fresh mango and cream. I'm a meat person (sorry my lovely vegetarian readers) so I got a stick of chicken with insane spice -- writing this now I still feel it on the tip of my tongue.

Added bonus: As a subpar Mandarin speaker, having the locals who worked at the shops tell me my Mandarin sounded good was quite the personal perk. But if you don't speak Mandarin no fret -- a pointed finger does equally a good job in the night market.

Recommendation: Find a night market in any country you travel. While Beijing's was incredible, I'm sure there are versions all over the globe. It's a great way to experience more local culture but make sure you negotiate with those street vendors on little trinkets so you're not getting ripped off.
