Added bonus: When you're high up enough and you stand in front of these small rectangular windows on the sides of the walls, you feel a gush of cool wind blow at you. It's perfect if you're going on a really hot day.

Recommendation: If you have the option between the easy or more difficult path, go the hard way. When are you gonna be walking up the Great Wall? Also, if grandmas in slippers could walk all the way to the top on the hard route, you definitely can as well.
